Dog Influenza
Several years ago an outbreak of Dog Influenza occurred in Racing Greyhounds that were exposed to horse influenza in Florida. It spread to several other locations and had a 1-5% death rate before it was identified. Recently a vaccine has been developed to help protect against it. You may hear about this in the news, especially as the News media is reporting on the human and swine flu season. The vaccine is not considered a "core" vaccine. That is, it is not required or needed for most pets. There are only about 5 areas in the US which have had outbreaks such as Florida and only in certain situations, show or competition dogs, kennel/boarding situations, etc. Dogs that travel especially to areas such as shows, breeding facilities and other areas of multiple dog exposure may be more susceptible. Most dogs if they get it will have a "bad cold/cough" however as in human flu only a few could progress to a serious or life threatening illness. It is not an epidemic and the average dog does not need this vaccination at this time.

Adoptions
When you are looking for an addition to your family, there are many animals in need of homes. Occasionally we have patients at the hospital who need new owners.
Call us 916-624-3322. Also we maintain a book of animals looking for new homes, lost pets, or people wanting new pets. Come check it out or add to it if you find you are no longer able to take care of your pet for any reason. In addition there are many rescue organizations such as the Placer County SPCA and animal control facilities which unfortunately have many unwanted animals that need homes. We participate with these organizations for spaying and neutering and medical care. They also need donations and volunteers if you can help.
Found Home
Last month we had 5 kittens left in a box on our doorstep. Two are left and still need homes. They are female, healthy, short hair tabbies and have been spayed. They are about 16 weeks old and full of play. We are asking a donation to cover half the cost of the services we have provided. If you are interested come visit them.

Current Events and Specials
Often you may see in the news articles about Diabetes Awareness Month for Pets, or Pets are Wonderful Month, or Senior Pets Awareness month or Pet Dental Awareness, or Spay and Neuter Day, etc.
Of course these things are always with us and our pets and we do our best to always advise you on what is best for your pet to keep them healthy and happy as long as possible. In addition, occasionally manufacturing or pharmaceutical companies, laboratories or organizations provide discounts to us which we can pass on to you. We will let you know about any specials that may apply, be sure and ask us too.
As you know the best, most economical special is preventive health care. This is true for human health as well as pet care. Nutrition, exercise, regular grooming, vaccinations, flea and heartworm prevention are well known. However what is less well known is regular, routine examinations are as or more important for the maintenance of good health. Since our pets can't specifically tell us about their problems and because their life spans are relatively short, it is imperative that they receive physical examinations every 6 months, if you want to prevent problems and maximize their quality of life. Each life stage and each pets life style have different needs at various ages. We can help you plan for the needs of your friends, instead of having to deal with crisis to crisis. Call us, we can help and save you money and help your pet at the same time.

Dental Care
One of the most unrealized need among our pets is dental care. 30-50% of pets two to four years of age already have significant periodontal disease. With the popularity of small breeds of dogs which are highly susceptible to periodontal disease, retained deciduous teeth, loss of teeth, bad breath because of infection, unfortunately it is becoming a more and more common problem. The longer dental care is postponed, the more expensive it can become as well as permanent loss of teeth and pain and predisposing your pet to other problems such as heart and kidney disease. Bring your friend in for an oral exam and assessment so that we can get you started on good preventative care.
